What's Wrong With Your Appliance?

Our engineers diagnose and fix all of the following faults — usually on the first visit.

Washing Machine Failures

Drum not spinning, leaking from the door or drum, F-codes, door lock failure, not draining.

Fridge Freezer Breakdowns

Not cooling, compressor failure, excessive icing, unusual noises, temperature fluctuations.

Oven & Cooker Faults

Not reaching temperature, element failure, thermostat faults, door seal issues, ignition problems.

Dishwasher Problems

Not draining, poor wash results, leaking, E-codes, door latch failure, not filling.

Tumble Dryer Issues

Not heating, drum not turning, overheating cut-out, excessive lint, long cycle times.

Electric Hob Faults

Zones not working, won't switch off, cracked glass, element failure, touch control issues.

Before You Book: Appliance Faults Explained

Not every breakdown is an emergency, and we would rather help you work out which yours is. If there is water coming out, a burning smell, or a freezer full of food at risk, act now using the steps below and then call us. If the appliance is simply not working, a normal same-day or next-day booking will serve you just as well and cost less.

Safety first: If you can see or smell burning, or there is water anywhere near an electrical connection, switch off at the consumer unit rather than reaching for the appliance itself. We repair electric appliances only — if you smell gas, leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 immediately.

Try these checks before you call us

  1. Water escaping — isolate it Turn off the appliance at the wall socket and close the water tap feeding it, usually behind or under the unit. If you cannot reach the tap, use your property stopcock. Then put towels down and call us.
  2. Burning smell or hot casing — unplug it Switch off at the socket and unplug. Do not run "one more cycle" to see if it clears. This applies especially to tumble dryers, where lint is highly flammable.
  3. Freezer failure — keep the door shut A closed freezer holds temperature for roughly 24 hours. Do not keep opening it to check. Move the most valuable items to a neighbour or a cool box with ice packs.
  4. Repeatedly tripping the electrics Unplug the suspect appliance and reset your consumer unit. If the power then holds, you have identified the faulty appliance — leave it unplugged and call us.
  5. Check it is actually the appliance Before booking anything, test the socket with something you know works, and check for a tripped breaker. It costs you nothing and occasionally saves a call-out entirely.

Common symptoms, likely causes, and what we do

SymptomLikely causeWhat our engineer does
Water leaking across the floor Split hose, failed door seal, cracked sump, or a blocked filter forcing water out under pressure. We isolate the supply, trace the leak under a controlled fill, and replace the failed component.
Appliance tripping the RCD A component breaking down internally and leaking to earth — commonly a heating element. Each circuit is insulation-tested to find which component is at fault.
Freezer defrosting unexpectedly Failed thermostat, compressor start relay, or door left ajar overnight. We prioritise getting it holding temperature again, then diagnose the underlying failure.
Burning smell from the appliance Overheating motor, seized bearing, or lint contact with a heating element in a dryer. Unplug immediately. We inspect for heat damage before the appliance is used again.
Door locked with the load trapped Interlock failure, or water still in the drum holding the lock engaged. We drain the machine down safely and release the door without damaging it.
How long it takes

Most emergency call-outs are diagnosed and resolved in 45–90 minutes on site.

Typical lifespan

Across all domestic appliances, expect roughly 8–15 years of service life depending on type and usage.

Is it worth repairing?

In an emergency the first question is containment, not economics. Once the immediate risk is dealt with, our engineer will give you an honest view on whether the appliance is worth repairing.
